Commemorate Anzac Day with Your Pet

25th April and is arguably Australia’s most important national occasion and is commemorated as Anzac Day. It marks the anniversary of the first key military action fought by Australian and New Zealand forces during the First World War.

Due to government orders that prevented large public gatherings in case of Japanese air attack, Anzac Day was first commemorated at the Australian War Memorial in 1942. Anzac Day has been annually commemorated at the Australian War Memorial ever since. Australians worked with lots of animals during the war. So many that the Australian War Memorial held a special exhibition for animals to acknowledge their contribution. Many animals played a role in helping the armies in various places and dogs are one of them. Dogs played a major role as messengers in order to pass vital messages from one place to another.

Why Did Armies Use Messenger Dogs?

Dogs were used as messengers and proved to be as reliable as soldiers in the dangerous job of running messages. Communication was always a problem and was a major complexity of trench warfare. Field communication systems were crude and there was always the very real possibility that vital messages from the front would never get back to headquarters or vice versa. There was a chance that human runners would not get through as they were potentially large targets. In the heat of a battle, there was even less chance of a runner getting through as the enemy’s artillery was likely to be pounding the frontline and the area behind it. Traveling on the vehicles was also problematic as they could break down, or the ‘roads’  could have been reduced to a mushy pulp.

Thus, the help from dogs came as a god’s blessing. Many dogs played an important role in the war as messenger dogs. Here are three of them who are very well known for their bravery and service.

War dog 102 Trick, a Collie

101 Bullet, an Airedale

103 Nell, a Cross Setter

All three dogs were very efficient in message carrying and provided service to 2nd, 4th, and 5th Australian divisions.

This Anzac Day let’s commemorate these animals and these brave soldiers who provided great service to Australia in time of war without thinking about themselves or their family and laid their lives for the protection of their country.
