Pet Ear Care

When you first take charge of your new puppy of kitten, it is a great idea to train them to let you look in and clean their ears. Regular ear cleaning can help prevent the build-up of smelly wax and possible ear infections.

You should only clean pets’ears with a product specifically designed for this purpose, as these are pH balanced for the skin/ ears, and contain cleanser ingredients.

  • Gently hold the ear tip vertically to open the ear canal (the lowest opening when looking down into the ear);
  • Direct the tip of the cleaner into the ear canal and squeeze a liberal amount of liquid into the ear;
  • While still holding the ear, firmly massage the base of the ear for about 30 – 60 seconds to help the cleaner dislodge any chunks of material in the canal;
  • Allow the pet to shake his head to also help dislodge material;
  • Wipe out any chunks of ear wax etc seen in the canal area with a cotton swab or cotton ball, and wipe the inside of the ear flap clean also.

If there is a significant amount of brown matter on the cleaning pad, this could indicate that your pet has ear mites. Ear mites can be treated with products such as Revolution or Advocate spot on, or Ilium Ear Drops.

You should never add drops to an ear with a damaged ear drum, so if your pet has a significant problem with the ears, which is not improving after a few days of the above cleaning, you should have your vet inspect the ear canal for yeast infections, grass seeds, polyps or other growths, and also to check if the ear drum is damaged.
