Dry vs. Wet Dog Food – The better choice?

Feeding the Fido what he loves is a very rewarding feeling. And, if your pet’s favourite meal is nutritionally rich, you can rest assured that your pup’s dietary requirements are met and his overall health is being maintained. But when it comes to providing good food to your dog, one of the most significant questions is whether dry dog food or wet dog food is better.

Dry dog food does not have more nutritional value than wet dog food, and vice-versa. The nutritional value depends on the individual dog food composition and its ingredients. So, generally, there is not much difference with nutrition. As long as the nutritional value of the food is good, both dry and wet dog foods are a heads up for your pup.

However, there are a few differences, and both have their pros and cons. Here are some of them:

Pros and Cons of Dry and Wet Dog Food

Pros of Wet Dog Food

Wet dog food contains far more moisture than dry dog food, as you may have guessed, making it the ideal choice for dogs living in hotter areas. It is also more suitable for hyperactive dogs and service dogs that are more prone to dehydration. Sick or elderly dogs may also benefit from wet food. Also, canned wet food is more aromatic and appealing than dry dog food and is easier to chew.

Cons of Wet Dog Food

There are a few inconveniences with wet food. Wet food is messier by its nature, so you might find your dog inadvertently covered in it. Once opened, the can of wet food may spoil quickly, and you can’t even store the leftovers for the next meal. Therefore, if your dog doesn’t eat its meals in one go, dry food is a better option for them.

Pros of Dry Dog Food

As mentioned earlier, dry food is more convenient to eat, and your dog won’t end up covered in food, as in the case with wet food. It won’t spoil even if left out all day, so, dry food is particularly beneficial for slow-eaters or grazers. Chewing dry foods may also prevent tartar buildup and dental diseases. Also, dry foods are cheaper and can be stocked up for the long term.

Cons of Dry Dog Food

Dry dog food has less moisture content, and therefore, it may fail to provide the same long-lasting satiety as its wet counterpart. It may also be less flavorful than wet food and more difficult to chew for pets suffering from dental disease.

So, Dry Dog Food or Wet Dog Food?

Unless you have specific preferences for your dog, it is difficult to say which food is best for him. While generally, the dry one is a good fit for most dogs and for houses with multiple dogs due to its long shelf life and stability, some wet food during summers, or for a change, never go amiss.
