War Against Fleas

A flea infestation in your home can be very difficult to get on top of, but you can win against fleas! Be prepared though, as it can take up to eight weeks of on-going flea management! Not only do you have to start all pets in the household (and any visiting pets) on a flea control product, but you also will have to remove all flea stages (immature fleas, larvae and flea eggs) from the pet’s environment.

flea life cycle

Each female flea flea can lay up to 350 eggs in one week. These eggs (and hatching larvae) collect in the pet’s bedding and anywhere the pet lies...lounges, beds, carpets, the car!! You will need to wash all the pet’s bedding in very hot water, vacuum all areas the pets frequent (discarding all vacuum contents immediately) and, in some cases, use an environmental product such as a flea spray or flea bomb to kill fleas, larvae and flea eggs that may remain in the house / kennel etc.

It can be hard for owners to choose the best flea product for their pet, as a product that is perfect for a stay-at-home dog may not be the best choice for a dog that is out swimming every day or a dog with a sensitive stomach that is prone to vomiting!.

So how do you choose the best product for your pet? The answer is to consider the lifestyle and health status of your pet and find the best product match using the features and benefits lists of the various flea-control products available.

Here we have compiled an easy to read summary for each of the main flea-control products, with the features and benefits and a “watch out for’’ section for all the products, to help you choose the right product for your pet! We have categorised the products as:

  • Oral chews and tablets
  • Topical spot-ons
  • Topical sprays and rinses
  • Premises products

Oral products care a great choice for dogs that swim regularly, as there are no restrictions for swimming or bathing after treatment; also good for any dogs that are sensitive to topical products. These products are also a favourite for households where owners and children have sensitive skin that are easily irritated by chemicals.
